Policy changes will not be undertaken with regard to fringe benefit tax (FBT) and there will be a re-look only to make it painless, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman M.S. Darda said here Friday.

The CBDT is on course with the direct tax collection target of Rs.1,780 billion ($38 billion) in 2005-06, Darda told reporters at a Bengal Chamber of Commerce business meet.

"We have collected Rs.714.64 billion from April to November 2005 and are on course to reach the target," he said.

Apart from making the direct tax system simpler, the CBDT is taking steps to bring tax evaders under the tax net, Darda said.

"We are sending letters to persons quoting wrong permanent account numbers (PAN) from the annual information returns (AIRs) to check high value transactions," he said adding "the effort is to net the tax evaders".

The CBDT is trying to pay out refunds within four months, Darda said.

"Our vision is to make the tax payers file returns, pay taxes and redress grievances online by 2010. We will be able to attain it in another three years with the full computerisation of the department," he added.
