Default Is this normal for pre-paid mobile operators?

I am a Idea prepaid customer. On 29th June 2012, I activated 2G on my number using the 98 rupees coupon (2GB data). The validity of this coupon is 30 days and was due to expire on 29th July 2012. On 30th July 2012, I received absolutely no intimation that this coupon has expired and subsequently Rs. 82 were unfairly deducted from my balance for usage of 4MB data. This is very surprising because the service should have been terminated immediately after the coupon had expired.

I have noticed that many unsuspecting customers fall prey to such tactics by prepaid mobile operators. The poor customer has to remember the expiry date and if he forgets, he might end up paying 200/300 rs. to the mobile operator! My question is whether this practice is normal and ethical? At no point of time was I as a consumer made aware that the data connection will continue to remain ON after expiry of coupon. Even the operator's website did not provide this information when I paid for the coupon.

I contacted the operator's customer service several times but they only recite what their call center bosses have trained them to say "This is not the company's problem". Of course this is the company's problem. The company has taken my hard earned money and it is answerable for it. Despite my request, a formal complaint was not lodged by customer care therefore I wrote to the appellate authority.

Look forward to hear what the consumer advocates have to say about this.
