Armed forces' teams Sunday called off their rescue operations at Veligonda in Nalgonda district, the site of Saturday's train accident that killed 123.
Army and Railway officials ruled out the possibility of finding more bodies from the wreckage of the Repalle-Secunderabad Delta Fast Passenger train, which had derailed and plunged into a rivulet due to breaches on the track caused by gushing waters from two overflowing reservoirs following heavy rains in the region.
The accident occurred early Saturday near Veligonda, about 80 km east of here in Nalgonda district.
The Army rescue teams were Sunday joined by divers from the Indian Navy and personnel from Indian Air Force to search for bodies in the mangled compartments and in the rivulet.
Twelve bodies were retrieved from the wreckage and the mud in the rivulet during the daylong operations but confusion prevailed over the exact number of casualties.
Railways put the toll at 112, but the local civil officials said the toll had climbed to 123.
Thomas Verghese, the in-charge general manager of the South Central Railway, told newsmen at the accident site that rescue operations had been completed. "There are no more bodies in the derailed compartments and we are now focusing on removing the wreckage and restoring the railway line," he said.
Heavy cranes were deployed to clear the engine and seven compartments and the work was likely to be completed Monday. Restoration of the railway track, however, may take 10 to 12 days.
Railway officials said a total of 63 bodies were shifted to Hyderabad while another train carrying 43 bodies reached Guntur railway station early Sunday. The remaining bodies are also being sent to the state capital.
In Hyderabad, 43 bodies were identified and handed over to the victims' relatives. The mortuary at the Osmania Hospital, where an autopsy was conducted on all bodies, was thronged by dozens of wailing relatives.
A majority of the dead were from Guntur district and they were coming to Hyderabad for celebrating Diwali.
Opposition leader and former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who visited the accident site Sunday morning, demanded a judicial inquiry into the mishap.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development A. Narendra also visited the accident site.
