Sony Corp. is entering a strong field of competition with a new flat TV screen in October, the company announced Wednesday.
The company will start selling its new Bravia flat TV series with eight variations Oct 1. Six of them will have liquid crystal display (LCD) screens and two will have conventional screens.
Sony developed LCDs with Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea and the Japanese technology company uses the joint-product for its new models.
The new 46-inch model will go for 650,000 yen ($5,900) while the 50-inch conventional rear-projection type will cost about 400,000 yen.
Sony hopes to break through the competition in the TV market where it has been staggering and to make a successful comeback.
Sony's shares increased after the company introduced a WEGA flat-screen cathode-ray tube series in the late 1990s.
However, the company fell behind its rivals including Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., branded as Panasonic, and Samsung, which soon took off with the flat-screen TVs.
