The situation continued to be tense in a Rajasthan district Wednesday, two days after clashes between protesting farmers and police over the lack of irrigation water.
The district administration has clamped a curfew in parts of Sriganganagar district.
"We have clamped a curfew in Anoopgarh, Gharsana and Ravala towns of Sriganganagar district from 10 p.m. Tuesday," district collector Kunjilal Meena said.
Security measures have been beefed up to maintain law and order. Several check posts restricting entry have been established at all routes leading towards Gharsana mandi. Shops selling sticks have been ordered closed.
Almost 20 people were also arrested during the strike called by the Kisan Majdoor Vyapar Sangarsh Samiti to demand implementation of an irrigation agreement involving the Indira Gandhi Cannal project.
Farmers have demanded the immediate release of their arrested leaders and an early agreement with the state government, failing which they have threatened to intensify protests across the state.
