Default Reservation in government jobs for women

The Assam government Saturday announced 30 percent reservation in all government jobs for women as part of a slew of measures to empower women in the state.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said empowering women would help solve many of the burning issues in the state, including putting an end to the dragging insurgency problem.

The 30 percent reservation in government jobs would also include jobs in the police department.

The ruling Congress party is going to table a bill in the forthcoming state assembly session in March to bring into effect the government plan for job reservation for women.

"We are confident this new move will change the face of Assam where women will play a very crucial role in the socio-economic development of the region," Gogoi said here.

This new plan is largely seen as kick starting the Congress government's election campaign well in advance for assembly polls slated for early next year.

There are speculations that there could be early polls in Assam with the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad a divided house at the moment.

Some other promises made by the chief minister include more emphasis on educating the girl child.

"We shall ensure that each and every girl in rural areas goes to school and becomes literate so that they can become self-reliant at a later stage," Gogoi said.

Women constitute about 48 percent of the 26 million people in Assam. The female literacy rate in Assam is 56.03 percent as against males' 71.93 percent.
