A two-day brainstorming session will see 60 Indian and 14 foreign experts drafting a comprehensive action plan for a tsunami warning system relevant to India, it was announced Thursday.

Global experts will evaluate India's disaster warning capabilities and setting up of related infrastructure at a summit to be inaugurated by Minister for Science and Technology and Ocean Development Kapil Sibal Friday at the Indian National Science Academy here.

Participants from the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, Russia and international bodies like Unesco would deliberate on possible international collaborations, the ministry said.

"While India has a fairly broad coverage of the earthquake monitoring system to detect quakes in and around the country, it does not have an effective tsunami detection system," the statement said.

Scientists from the departments of science and technology, ocean development and space, and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research have been examining the feasibility of tsunami detection and warning system for the Indian Ocean.

Catastrophic tsunami waves struck several countries Dec 26 killing over 150,000 people.
