A former beauty queen lost her bid for 2.2 million Singapore dollars ($1.3 million US) from her ex-husband as maintenance because, a court here said, she is richer than him on paper.
Jenny Wong Ser Wan, 57, will have to make do with 1,000 Singapore dollars ($591 US) a year and gets to keep 11.1 million Singapore dollars ($6.5 million) in assets under the ruling by Justice Judith Prakash.
Wong, who was Miss Singapore University in 1971, argued she should be granted the sum as future maintenance.
In the judgment published in The Straits Times Thursday, Prakish said Wong "has enough to support herself on for a long time to come in a comfortable lifestyle as long as she is not unduly extravagant and unduly indulgent towards her children".
Wong was in a much stronger financial situation than her ex-husband, Raymond Ng Cheong Ling, 54, who declared bankruptcy, Prakish said. Ng is the son of a multi-millionaire businessman.
Two of the couple's three children, who made claims against their father, were also awarded less than they asked for.
The youngest son, 19-year-old Ewe, was awarded 1,000 Singapore dollars a month although he had sought triple that amount. Eharn, 26, had sought 153,000 Singapore dollars ($90,500) to cover her studies. She received two-thirds that amount.
The couple divorced in 2000 after 24 years of marriage.
