Angry ICICI bank OTP - Real Pain in the neck !!

    Hello All,

I just wanted to bring into notice a genuine issue which really irritated me to the MAX.
I have a 5 years old Savings a/c with the ICICI bank and generally access my account details using internet banking facility.
As I am into Software profession, I travel to different countries for long durations hence I do not maintain a particular cell number.
Recently the bank has introduced the so called enhaced security feature called OTP (one time password).
OTP would be sent whenever you change a different computer machine.
This OTP would be then sent to you registered mobile number only (since I am an Indian a/c holder).

Imagine a situation where you move to a foriegn country and no more use your Indian cell number which is registered with your acount.... Its sad to say that you would not be able to see you account details online...

I nearly wasted my all day with the extremely talented customer care personnels discussing about my problem. Finaly they understood the problem and accepted that it was genuine !

I gave them the suggestion that if OTP is really required then send it my registered email id as well but they would send the OTP to registered mobile only :-(.

They proudly say that the OTP would be sent to the registered mail only if I was a NRI a/c holder.

I have no choice left with me but to choose a better Bank.

In my case, I had left the employer and joined a new company overseas.
I had also informed the customer care about the same before leaving India.

I have tried different methods of contacting the bank but of no use.
Instead of OTP these people should switch to other authentication methods like validating birthdate, mother's maiden name, etc. which other banks seldom use.

I am still not able to get access to the internet banking of ICICI Bank.

Looks like I have to change the Bank too......

Same problem I am facing since last 3-4 months. I am unable to access my savings account. When I interacted with ICICI Bank help desk, they said OTP messages are delivered to the mobile service provider, further they cannot do anything. They asked me to follow-up with the mobile service provider, when I said this is a too complex process, the Bank customer care says "except me all other NRIs are getting their OTPs". Within few minutes of our conversation, the Bank help desk has closed the service ticket raised by me stating 'satisfactory resolution'. I think this is the only Bank who employ this kind of security mechanism preventing you to access you own account. When I discussed with the help desk guy regarding 'changing of the Bank as my only option', his response was affirmative.

Default OTP issues & ICICI Customer Care executive issues

This OTP feature is nice but definitely a pain for people who are traveling quite often.

I called the ICICI bank customer care, they said that they cannot send it to the registered email ID for resident account holders but only for NRIs.

Options suggested by the great customer care executive (CCE):

Me: I do not have an Indian cell phone.
CCE: You don't have to buy an expensive phone. Buy a phone in which you can get sms that should be enough and activate international roaming.
Me: Is ICICI bank going to pay for my roaming charges just because I want to use their internet banking while I am away for a short while?
CCE: You can give us your international mobile number.
Me: Outside India, most countries charge for incoming SMS also. why should I bear the charges just because you don't want to send the OTP to my registered email address?
CCE: Sir, in that chase, convert your account to an NRI account.
Me: So every time, I go out of India, I convert my account to NRI account and everytime I come back to India, I convert again to resident account?
CCE: If you don't want to buy a mobile phone, that is the only option.

Just because some IDIOT at ICICI bank decided to implement something and make some rule, why should I spend my money on a service which the service provider (ICICI Bank) should be giving it to me anyway.
Looks like ICICI bank is hand in glove with the telecom companies or some of his/her relative is working in some telecom company so that this way people who have ICICI bank account and want to use net banking has to buy a mobile phone.

What is next from ICICI bank?
If you have to use your ATM card, they will send the PIN number to mobile every time when I put the ATM card in the machine because it is secure that way.

Angry Even for Indian resident its a pain

I have been harassed by OTP service over and over again....some crap security feature which is more to harrass rather benefit.

From my office computer it works well but from my home laptop tried all sort of solutions given in FAQ it would fail to work, worse when I try to call custome care they have disabled the option to directly talk to phone banker.... after alsmot 7-8 calls could not reach an agent whom I can tell my issue.

I regularly receive all bank transactions alert but OTP I neve receive. Also I treid sending sms to receive OTP but it never returns. So definitely its not that my mobile is wrongly registered.

Its really frustating to see with so many folks complaining about this feature why ICICI bank will not listen and take required actions.
