Hello,
I have been a victim of cyber fraud. INR 2, 90,000 were siphoned off from my ICICI bank account. The mistake involves Airtel, ICICI bank and I. I am presenting the details and would like to know how I can take action against Airtel.
All this happened in the evening of 23rd September. Next morning I went to Airtel to inquire why my SIM was being disabled but did not get any answer. They gave me a new SIM though after I established my identity by showing my PAN card. I also got a call from ICICI asking me whether I was the one making these transactions to which I said no. they then disabled my Internet user name and password.
- I got a hoax e-mail from government of India that I am entitled a refund of some extra money I had paid as tax. The e-mail linked me to a hoax ICICI bank website where I was asked to enter my personal details which I did. This was my mistake.
- The perpetrators rang up Airtel and cancelled my SIM under the pretext that I lost my phone. I do not know how they identified themselves as me but I did get an SMS from Airtel that my request for a new SIM will be processed.
- The criminals then produced false evidence of myself and obtained a new SIM of my phone number.
- They then logged onto my ICICI bank account using personal details that I had provided, registered 6-7 ICICI accounts for fund transfer and moved INR 2.9 Lakh to those accounts.
- Registering new accounts for funds transfer would have involved the use of Airtel network as every time we register an account a unique number is sent to our registered phone number that has to be entered on the website to complete the registration.
My complaint with Airtel is as follows.
I honestly think that there are serious loopholes in the procedure Airtel follows to establish identity that can lead to crime like this one and other more serious ones.
- What evidence did they have to establish that it was me cancelling my SIM and not someone else?
- What evidence did they take from the criminals before giving them a new SIM card of my phone number?
I wish to know how I can sue them and ensure better safety for all Airtel mobile connection holders.
Please advice.
Thanks,
Anshuman Agarwal

hi Rakesh, The issue is not resolved. in fact Airtel is not cooperating at all. They have given me no information as to how someone could fudge my identity and get a SIM card of my mobile number from an Airtel outlet.
I have tried reaching Airtel a few times but have not received even a single meaningful communication from them.
Please realize that this is a very serious internet fraud in which Airtel is clearly a party so it is their duty to help.
My employers want me to send Aitel a legal notice and also go to the consumer court. i am OK doing all that but i thought a respected brand would help me resolve the issue without legal involvement. This does not seem to be the case.
Please help.
Thanks
Anshuman
