Default IMEI No of Mobile Phone

    Dear Sir
To this forum I wish to ask few questions
How many of us have lost our GSM mobile phones in past five years or so? Have
u ever found it ? What is success rate of finding the mobile handset? What are
the TRAI guidelines for lost mobile handsets? What is the role of service
provider in tracing the mobile handset?
    Now read this –
All GSM mobile hand set manufacturers have IMEI no. on the handset which we all
know is the 15 digit no. under the battery of hand set or could be obtained by
pressing *#06# on your mobile handset. Through this number your mobile handset
could be traced. The manufacturers have done their duty for tracing the
mobiles. But please note that your mobile handset could be traced only by
service providers in the country not by the manufacturers. I could not find any
guidelines on TRAI website for tracing lost mobile handset. If there are any
    please let me know.
Now Procedure of finding your lost mobile handset –
    1. When you have lost it report it to your service provider and get new
SIM card by providing your address proof and photo ID card.
    2. GO to police and lodge the FIR for lost mobile. Police will send the
details to all service provider in the State and wait for the outcome. Police
will take time to trace your mobile hand set which is very bleak
    3. Meanwhile you have to buy new mobile to keep in touch with your
business contacts , friends and relatives.
    4. Now it is role of service provider which is in question for tracing the
handset. Police is dependent on service provider to trace the mobile phone as it
can be done only through IMEI no. Untill unless service provider puts a trace
to the IMEI no. no mobile phone could be traced. And service provider does not
provide any info on lost mobile handset to you but only give it to the police
who may be serious or not in tracing your handset. You are resigned to your fate
and consider your handset costing nearly Rs. 6000 or more as lost with all your
contacts , and important info which could be misused. If you have taken the
backup it is good news for you.
    5. Now how does the service providers in India put a trace to your mobile
handsets. Are they really serious in tracing your mobile handset? Just go and
ask them and they simply tell us to buy new one. Do they have any specific
guidelines for putting a trace to it. I have got info that if your mobile
handset is lost in Delhi , the service provider will put a trace only for delhi
state where as thieves steal mobile handset in Delhi and sell in for example in
Madhya Pradesh or any other state. It means your handset cannot be traced in any
how condition as they do not put all India trace. Also the trace is put only to
the service providers of the state in which your mobile handset is lost. For
mobile handsets inter state gangs work who steal mobiles in one state and sell
in other . Only in the condition of national security all India tracing exercise
is done,. You mobile hand set is resold in other states where it cannot be
    traced or sold part
    by part.
    6. After 5-6 days you lose interest in tracing your hand set, so does the
police and service provider in any how condition was never interested,. So the
second hand mobile market is flourishing in India. This is a big security risk,
which govt. agencies and TRAI should look into. British govt was able to avoid
attempted attack on airports due to tracing of mobile hand sets.
    7. In other countries all service providers have facilities to post your
IMEI no. on their websites so that you mobile phone can be blocked and cannot be
    reused.
    8. Now a days mobile handsets are doubling as laptops and costing more
than Rs. 10000/-. The handset manufacturers are laughing all the way to banks as
nearly 30 % of handsets are sold as replacements for stolen, lost etc. Service
providers are not interested in your handset tracing. It is we consumers who are
suffering due to lost details stored in handsets
    9. My request to TRAi is – Make guidelines for tracing mobile handsets as
in other countries. If handset is lost all service providers in India should
put a trace to it so that stolen second hand mobile market does not flourish .

Point here to note that, TRAI is just lying in the pockets of some Mobile Giants
like Reliance or Airtel etc.., though it works independently.
Mobile Operator can easily track from their CDR"s & Equipment Database-EIR, But
if they implement this game plan they actually use their Business of Services as
thieves are also using their network may be anyone's mobile.
Police also do not lodge FIR as they have to work more.

    Dear Siddhartha

The piece on lost mobile is good. I will try to find out from the net what
provisions do the other countries have in this respect. Meanwhile let us all
write individually to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, New Delhi.

The best way is to install a software easily available (Symbian based phones
have freeware as well) that runs in stealth mode on the handset. It silently
sends an SMS to the number you specify the moment a SIM card is changed. So you
at least know what number is using your handset and can nab the culprit.

Default i too thought of that

yes the idea is very good and i thought of it when i lost 2 sony ericsson p910i phones costing 25000 in 2005-06 within 4 months!

in uk they have a database that helps u get ur cell back unless its smuggled out of uk.

in india we can have a service like that. at least the incentive to steal and sell wont be there to petty thiefs. of course phones will be smuggled out of the country and they will always have a markt but i think the govt will be able to curb the menace to a very great extent...

in india nothing happens till some terrorists use stolen mobiles to detonate bombs... remember how police wouldnt act much when a car was stolen... but after terr used it to explode bombs, all such complaints are looked at seriously by the police!
