    Default Vodafone GPRS Billing

    Hi,

My name is Ashish Nijhawan, residing in Pune, Maharashtra. I had taken a post paid connection from Vodafone, Vodafone Relationship no. 1.55776859 & Vodafone No 7798880020 which i have now disconnected because of a dispute regards to GPRS usage. My handset is iPhone 4 and total outstand bill is Rs. 1168.43
I had bought the plan MNP_MVG_MV_299 and during the time of purchase had mentioned that i do not want to use GPRS as I already have WiFi at home. Subsequently in my bill dated 05.09.11 there was a data usage charge of Rs. 455 /- which was a big surprise as I had never signed up for the service. So i took up the matter with their Customer Service, Nodal & Appellate authority but have had received a standard response that I have used the service so I have to pay for it. They also mentioned that the service is activated by default for all vodafone customers. From my end I have paid the bill for the voice services which I had subscribed too but I have not yet paid the charges for data services as I am disputing the charges for the following reason
    1) As a repsonse to my complaint I am told my Vodafone Customer care that GPRS is a default service. If so why had they not informed this explicity at the time of sale that GPRS service will be activated by default on my handset. I was explicitly asked If i want to subscribe to a data pack for Rs; 99 for 2 GB GPRS data access and I flatly refused as I didnt want data services. Never once during the discussion was I informed about this default service.
    2) With ref. to point (1). Post my initial discussions with the customer team I had visited the Vodafone shop at my office premises and asked them to show me how is the feature activated and how I can disable on my handset. They were unable to show me how this feature worked on my handset iPhone. How do they then expect consumer to be aware of the same? Infact we werent even aware of this service being enabled on our handset till we received the bill with charges for data usage
    3) The connection that I had was used by my wife who is currently on maternity leave and at home. I have a Wi-Fi connection at home and my wife uses the Wi-Fi service to connect to internet from the handset as she does not travel out very frequently. Now when i review the bill mentioned above, I see data charges being applied on a daily basis. This is quite surprising as my wife always had Wi-Fi switched on, on the handset? Also why will she use the GPRS service if she has access to WiFi In her initial discussion with Vodafone customer care when she had mentioned this the customer care representative had mentioned that they have had some cases with iphone wherein vodafone live services were being consumed even if you are connected using WiFi. If that is the case then this is a technical issue that Vodafone should work towards resolving and not charge the customers unnecessarily
    4) Another point that i am being told is that i accessed through Vodafone Connect Browser. I am not aware of any such browser being installed on my iPhone and use the native browser (safari) to access internet. Again another point which Vodafone has not been able to clarify or guide on

They are refusing to cancell the data usage charges and now I have started receving calls from Vodafone Customer Care telling me that I am lying because I don't want to pay! This is an accusation which is very defamatory and personal especially since I have paid for the service I had subscribed to and also am currently taking service from multiple other companies and have been paying up all my dues in a timely manner; this includes another mobile connection with Idea Cellular with whom I had explicitly requested to enable GPRS data services on my handset. This is apart from the numerous other calls I have had with Vodafone customer care even when email communications was in progress thereby showing a complete disconnect between their teams and wastage of my time.

As a law abiding citizen I am deeply disappointed with Vodafone (and especially as I can see similar complaints from other consumers in this forum) and kindly request you to help me in this matter as I would like to close this quickly to avoid any more harassment.

    Regards
    Ashish Nijhawan

    Hi Ashish and forum members,

I am facing the exact same situation with regard to unauthorized activation of services on my iPhone (98199 11322) and hence resulting in incorrect charges for my internet usage. I have posted this issue in this forum (under the topic Vodafone wrong billing started by nilesh.shekokar) and sent mails to Vodafone. But they just say you used GPRS and hence the charges. They do not seem to understand that I have been using internet on my iPhone since an year through WiFi. Only last month Vodafone activated core iPhone services by default on my number (without my permission) and because of this since then my internet usage has been going under GPRS instead of my Wifi, withouht my knowledge.

Vodafone activated the iPhone core services by default since last month. How can Vodafone activate a service on my number without my permission or approval. If they are introducing a service, they should ask me if I would like that service and activate only when I approve it. Who is Vodafone to decide what service has to be activated on my number? Vodafone does not pay the money, I pay the bills. I should determine what service has to be activated on my number.

Because that service was activated without my permission and knowledge, I must have been using internet at home using Wifi as I have been doing for the past year or so. Vodafone did not intimate me that this service was activated on my number, it did not take my permission to activate this service. So these charges have been consumed without my knowledge. Otherwise why would anyone use internet at Rs 655.8 for 65 MB, while there is a pack for Rs. 99 for 1 GB (1024 MB). And when I looked at the details of the usage, 10 KB has been charged for every 15 minutes (day and night for the whole month), which further increased my usage. As explained by Ashish above, this might be some Vodafone live thing which constantly accesses the internet and increases my usage, all without my knowledge.

The result of this totalitarian decision by Vodafone to activate the services without my permission is an 80% increase in my regular bill. Again, I have to pay the bill, I have to cough up the money, then I have to decide what service is to be activated on my number, not Vodafone. Since its Vodafone's decision to activate this service without my explicit permission, Vodafone has to pay this extra bill. These charges have to be reversed.

    Regards,
    Kasi

Hi Kasi..completely empathize with you. I think we are both raising the same issue and I have seen other similar postings too. I have personally discontinued my number with them specifically for this reason as I cant be asked to pay for a service which i havent bought. Also as you rightly mentioned...why wouldnt I buy the 1 GB pack @ Rs.100/-? I have done that with idea as i wanted to use their GPRS service. So for me this is completely unjustified. On top of this issue in the last call the Vodafone person tried to insinuate that I am a Liar...

    Regards
    Ashish

Hi Melange, my issue is not yet resolved. Infact post the message from vodafone customer care i havent received any email but did receive another call asking me to pay, saying that I had to some payment due, not for data charges but for monthly rental. I told them to share the details as I had cleared all dues related to rental and voice charges and wanted to validate, but haven't recieved any communication since then.

I have four questions in my first post above. If you guys have nothing to hide I would appreciate if you can respond to them one by one? Pls stop giving a blanket statement as that is not addressing any concerns that i have raised.
