While controversy rages over the death of an 11-month-old overweight boy in a government hospital here, another obese baby weighing 25 kg at 18 months has been discovered in a West Bengal village.

Suman Khatun lives in Metala village of Birbhum district and breakfasts with one litre of milk and 250 grams of biscuits, local reports said. Lunch is 500 grams of rice.

With two other children aged 10 and four, her parents Jalaluddin and Beli Bibi can ill-afford the expenses. While neighbours have chipped in to feed their baby, the couple is hoping for state assistance.

The case comes to light only two days after heavyweight 'wonder boy' Lokman died at the state-run SSKM Hospital Sunday evening because of alleged negligence.

Lokman, who weighed 23 kg and consumed five kg of milk and one kg rice powder a day, was admitted to the SSKM Hospital with the assistance of West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty on May 18.

The state government had sanctioned Rs.25,000 for his food.

Lokman choked to death while his mother was feeding him. Hospital sources said the baby started hiccupping while eating. The boy's father Monday lodged a written complaint with the hospital superintendent alleging negligence.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Health Minister Suryakanta Misra mourned his death.
