    Default SONY VAIO: NVIDIA Graphic Chip Issue

    Hi All,

    I purchased SONY VAIO laptop (Model: VGN-NR21S/s 15.4”, serial No: 28273663-5002884) on 10th July, 2008. After one year of purchase battery backup reduced to 10-15 mins but that’s fine I used direct power. I purchased it from Netherlands & don’t have international warranty. In the June, 2010, laptop started showing some strange display problems, I used recovery tools to fix the problem and it worked fine, it happened for 4-5 times then display was completely gone. I went to 2 different sony service centers and explained my problem but they told me that motherboard needs to be replaced and it will cost Rs. 18942. I was sure that motherboard is repairable because laptop was working fine but display was not there.
    Then I checked on internet and found that this is a known issue with NVIDIA graphic chip, the chip is not integrated properly that's why it could not resist the heat and come of the circuit. I also came to know that sony US has offered free service for the laptops which are defective because of NVIDIA graphic chip. I tried to negotiate with SONY INDIA on these grounds but they are asking for large sum of money to replace the complete motherboard. I want to highlight this and request all my friends to not buy the SONY VAIO laptops, their service is really bad.
    My question is what can I do to highlight this issue to senior management of SONY? They have provided only one customer care email ID which is not helpful. This is all fraud, SONY should accept their responsibility and fix this NVIDIA problem free of cost. I want to request everybody to raise the issue if they are facing similar problems. Even some models of DELL & HP have similar NVIDIA graphic chip related issues. What are these companies doing to punish NVIDIA for faulty integration?

    My complain is very similar 2 above. except for the fact tht proucts are from different vendors but problem is for the same chip

    Description:
    In the Early 2007 a major defect was detected in the 84/86 series of Nvidia Graphic Chipsets. These faulty chipsets were unluckly delivered in huge nos to various vendor as desktop/laptop parts. Details about the defect and letigation can be found at :

    I bought a dell inspiron 1420 laptop on 27/02/2008 having the Nvidia 8400M GS Chipset. Things were OK with slight extra overheating. But i never thought it was a sign of some BIG Problem. In the mid 2010 - somewhere in the month of July my laptop started behaving very oddly and withing 15 days things started getting grabbled, Blue screen coming in ocassionally and finally the laptop stopped coming up. It is then that i started looking for possible problems and solutions when i noticed something called Nvidia Defect. On further research ( I am a Computer Engineer by Profession and good understanding of computer hardware) i found that this laptop of mine was among the faulty ones. The fact can be established through these two links:

    putting the service tag no - 13CF1BS (my laptop service tag) one can find the different part nos for my laptop. finding the part no of Nvidia Graphic chipset and putting it in the following website shows the it is in the list of faulty parts.

    select dell->inspiron 1420 -> no display -> part no (KN146)

    I also came across to know that dell has extended the warranty for such laptops by one year. But is that enough? If toyota has failing brakes in its car can it doaway by saying that it will support the failing brakes for a year and then onwards customer is on there own? I Would like to raise this concern and available of motherboard replacement at their cost, since the fault is there's.

    Kindly suggest me how to go about solving my problem and how to approach consumer court. Also,
    since i bought the device directly through dell wesbite can i file the complaint at my place of residence?

    Thank you
