Buying frenzy across sectors, particularly in heavyweight stocks and bluechips, saw Indian share markets soar for the second consecutive trading session Thursday and lifted a key index by over 100 points yet again.
The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) closed the day at 8,744.04 points, as against the previous day's close at 8,638.34 points, to record a gain of 107.50 points, or 1.22 percent.
The rise came on top of a gain of 103.37 points, or 1.21 percent, Wednesday. The Sensex, in fact, has gained over 10 percent in a month.
The positive mood of the market could also be gauged by the fact that the higher opening level of 8,655.14 points - over the previous day's close- was also the day's lowest. The intra-day high for the index was 8,675.71 points.
As many as 23 shares that comprise the 20-share Sensex moved up, six fell and one remained unchanged.
"The mood of the market was definitely positive all through the trading session. Though there was some resistance after the Sensex breached the 8,700-point mark, the bulls were unrelenting," an equity analyst with a leading brokerage said.
"The mood was also lifted because of strong performance in Asian markets and in the US where shares were at four-and-a-half year highs. There was also some short covering by investors as contracts for futures and options expired today."
Among the Sensex stocks, ITC led the gainers, up 4.26 percent at Rs. 134.65, followed by Grasim (3.11 percent at Rs. 1,351.25), Housing Development Finance (3.10 percent at Rs. 1,086.05) and Hindustan Lever (2.75 percent at 176.75).
Ranbaxy Laboratories led the losers, down 1.12 percent at Rs 361.85, followed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (0.57 percent at Rs. 922.65), Satyam Computers (down 0.56 percent at Rs. 642.80) and Hero Honda (0.24 percent at Rs. 840.40).
