Leading battery maker Amara Raja Batteries Ltd (ARBL) Thursday signed an agreement with Hyundai Motor India to supply 60,000 batteries to the Chennai-based company in the next 12 months.

"We are proud to be associated with Hyundai, which has been a trendsetter in the Indian passenger car industry. Today it is a major player both in India and globally," ARBL managing director Jay Galla said here.

Amara Raja is in the process of scaling up capacity at its Tirupati plant from 1.5 million units to 2.4 million units a year with an investment of Rs.380 million.

"With our new customer acquisitions, we expect to push up our market share in the passenger car segment," said Praveen S. Rao, head of automotive
batteries at ARBL.

The company manufactures batteries for cars, tractors, heavy commercial vehicles (trucks), ligh commerical vehicles, sports utility vehicles, multi-utility vehicles, three-wheelers and home inverters.

ARBL has been in the automotive battery supply business for just four years and also has ongoing agreements with Ashok Leyland, Fiat, General Motors, Hindustan Motors, Honda, Mahindra and Mahindra, Maruti and Tata Motors.

The company is an exclusive supplier to Daimler Chrysler, Ford and Swaraj Mazda and to select platforms like Honda Accord, Chevrolet Optra and Tavera and Maruti Swift.

Amara Raja also exports its automotive batteries to Australia, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, Africa and the Middle East.
