General Motors India (GM) Tuesday said its auto sales more than doubled in January 2005, with 3,022 units sold compared to 1,477 in the corresponding month last year.

Chevrolet Tavera, the popular multi utility vehicle in GM's stable, led the growth, accounting for 1,824 of the 3,022 units sold. The figure represents a growth of 104.6 percent in monthly sales.

The January sales included 762 units of Chevrolet Optra and 430 units of Opel Corsa.

An upbeat GM India's vice president (corporate affairs) P. Balendran said: "To meet the growing demand for our cars, we are ramping up production at our Halol facility to provide world-class vehicles made in India to the discerning Indian consumer.

"We are also working on several programmes to make 2005 an eventful year for the company."

Since launching Chevy's Tavera in mid-2004, the company has sold 10,241 units.

GM India, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, makes the Chevrolet Tavera, Opel Corsa, Opel Corsa Sail and Opel Swing at its facility at Halol in Gujarat.

The company also sells the imported Opel Vectra and Chevrolet Forester.
