My name is Giju Roshan residing at Vishakathil House, Olakettiyambalam PO, Mavelikara and drafting this letter with great mental agony that I lost my first new born baby after Caesarean. The exact reason which leads to the death of our baby is still a mystery as Dr Girija fails to provide a satisfactory explanation to us. In this regard I am forced to make this compliant to get the exact cause behind the death of my baby.
My wife has been under observation and treatment of Dr Girija Gynecologist of Parabhrama Hospital Oachira related to pregnancy and delivery. All her periodic routine checkups and reports are quite satisfactory and as per the routine checkup of 38 th week (19-Oct-2011) my wife had told the Doctor that the movement of the baby in womb was not frequent to which the doctor observed and told everything was absolutely normal except that the liquid was a bit less and advised her to come on 24-Oct-2011 for next check up and with the intention of getting admitted in hospital. On the 24-Oct-2011 checkup my wife has reported less movement again of baby and after examination doctor observed that baby’s heart beat is normal and fluid level is low and suggested to admit immediately, and she was given with fluid/ glucose and even after giving 2-3 bottles of fluid my wife strongly reported lesser movement of baby and by evening doctor again examined and observed the baby’s heart beat is normal however doctor scheduled the Caesarean next morning that is on 25-Oct-2011 at 9 am and confirmed that the tomorrow’s first Caesarean would be my wife’s.
On 25-Oct-2011 around 10 am my wife was taken to the operation theater, she was perfectly alright with no physical symptoms. After waiting outside for 1 hour I did not get any update on enquiry of the status the nurse told that my wife operation is not yet conducted as doctor is attending another serious operation. Around 12.30 pm doctor came up and informed us that the baby and mother is heavily infected and baby is not able to breathe or take respiration and needs to be shifted to any hospital which had ventilator facility and the baby was rushed to the nearest hospital SBM and admitted to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit this journey took roughly 20minutes and during this journey the baby was given continuous respiration. After 30 minutes Dr Vidhu who examined the baby came with bad news that baby can’t survive as baby is not responding and while ventilating he found blood in the lungs and no chance to survive and told that the baby’s brain is dead 99% and assured us no hope and told that the baby would be kept in ventilator for next 24 hours. During evening 18hrs Dr. Vidu again told that the baby was not responding and would keep the baby in ventilator until we wanted. Next day 26-Oct-2011 I and my family decided to stop the ventilator support to baby and thus doctor had withdrawn the ventilator support and nearly after 1 hour baby was declared dead around 12.30 pm. Earlier during our discussion with Dr.Vidu he was unable to tell the reason of babys death and had told that this death could repeat to the next baby born if this death was related to genetically failure and to know how exactly the baby died he suggested autopsy at Trivandrum DDRC lab. Thus to know the exact cause of the baby’s death we had opted for autopsy and the body of the baby was handed over to Lab people by preserving the body as per medical requirements.
After that I along with my brother in law had a lengthy discussion with Dr Vidhu (who examined the baby) and Dr Girija (who conducted the Caesarean) and their explanations are as below
Conversation with Dr Girija
What is the exact reason which leads to the death of baby?
The exact reason is still unknown to me, this is the first case I have ever seen in my entire career where the mother don’t have any type of major symptoms of infections till the last moment and the moment I operate a heavy bad foul smell spread over the operation theater from the uterus and I was totally confused and also found baby’s stool in the womb which is not suppose to happen at all. The mother internal organs were also infected. Infection could be one of the reason which leads to the death of the baby however I am not sure what’s went wrong.
What circumstances forced baby to pass the stool in the womb?
Exact reason cant be predicted, till the last moment baby’s heart beat was normal and infection might be one of the reason.
How mother and baby become infected and why don’t you identify it?
Till last moment everything was normal no symptoms of any infections found and to get an exact idea blood reports needs to come.
Blood test came after 2 days and found Rubella is slightly positive and doctor observed this could be the major reason of baby’s death…..but Dr Vidhu who examined the baby told us that the baby was not at all infected which is confusing us….
Could the baby be saved if this hospital is occupied with ventilator facility?
I don’t think so the moment we found that the baby is unable to breathe we have started the artificial respiratory system or incubation which is far more better than the ventilator.
Was baby alive when birth?
Yes very much, he cried twice as well after few minutes we found that baby is not able to breathe and turned blue.
Has the baby died due to any medical negligence or lack of proper investigation?
Not at all, at every stage of pregnancy everything was quite satisfactory.
Can baby be saved if operation done in the same day of the admission?
Yes we could have had a possibility to save the baby had we done 2 days ahead, but as there was no symptons of mother of any infection we could not take the chance……
How my wife is now, is there any major issues of her internal organs which got infected?
We have cleaned all her internal organs and now she is perfectly ok and can leave hospital within next 2 days and can conceive again.
Conversation with Dr Vidhu
What was the condition of the baby when admitted to your hospital?
The condition was very bad baby is not taking breathe by himself even after ventilated and to be very frank I had no hope at all after I examined the baby, in normal condition any baby would respond in a ventilator in 20minutes if it did not respond the brain death would happen. Kindly note the baby has not cried while he was taken outside that is what is mentioned in the report.
Why you don’t suggest or refer the baby to any multi specialty hospitals even after our request?
The baby was completely brain death so I don’t think any miracle will happen even if you shifted to any multi specialty hospitals they would do the same treatment which we give.
What could be exact reason of the baby’s death?
The cause of the death is due to the failure of the baby’s respiratory system.
What could be the reason of failure of normal respiratory system of baby?
I cant provide you with the exact reason might be the death of the brain or failure of any internal organs which needs to be investigated better to send the body for autopsy.
Do you think baby’s death is due to any medical negligence ?
I don’t know, this question should be answered by the doctor who conducted the Caesarean the baby’s conditions was very bad when admitted to my hospital we all tried our best but…..
Conclusion
As Dr Girija’s statement stating that “Rubella virus” is the cause of baby’s death which is not matching and this infection by Rubella was during last 2 days of the operation else this would have effected the mother and I do not understand why this infection was not found early and why only after babys death, also with Dr Vidhu statement and Dr Girija’s is still not revealing the exact reason of baby’s death. In this regard I humbly request you to conduct a thorough investigation and remove the mystery behind the death of my son. When I checked the net I found Rubella virus was completely in control in 1969 and can Rubella kill a baby in 2 days lots of doubts are being raised again and again. Further to this at the hospital when I wanted to take the medical bills in my wife name which was wrongly mentioned the administrative officer had remarked here we do many operations a day and all babies survive just because few baby die should you not come and correct the bill yourself and we waste time . I regretted my families decision to do the operation at Parabrahma Hospital had I done it at other hospital hopefully today I would be with my baby I have never found a reckeless hospital in my life where the doctor is not sure what to tell, admistrative officer not concerned of the outcome of the operation.
Kindly advice what to do so that some action could be taken against such a reckless hospital and doctor.
