West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Wednesday congratulated cricketer Sourav Ganguly on his 10,000th run in one-day internationals and returning to form.

"My best wishes are with Sourav for his achievement and also for returning to form fighting all the odds," Bhattacharjee said here.

"This is an excellent piece of news, which was conveyed to me when I was in a meeting. I am very happy," said the chief minister, a cricket buff himself.

Bhattacharjee, who shares a warm and personal relationship with Ganguly, also praised the latter for scoring a half-century.

Ganguly became the third batsman ever, after Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistani Inzamam-ul-Haq, to reach the milestone of 10,000th run in an ODI.

The 33-year-old, who achieved the feat with a single to cover off Dilhara Fernando, was returning to international cricket after serving a four-match ban and on the back of a string of poor scores.

The left-hander was eventually out for 51.
