Ten months after the Indian cricket board announced an ambitious tie-up with the now split Reliance Industries Ltd, nothing has accrued - and there is no word whether the project will be implemented at all.
Jagmohan Dalmiya, immediate past president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), had announced in August last year that the board had entered into a "Rs.50 to 70 million ($1.15 million-$1.61 million)" tie-up with Reliance Industries Ltd through which the company was supposed to assist the board in a variety of fields.
A top BCCI official confirmed nothing has accrued so far on the deal according to which Reliance was supposed to provide the BCCI with hi-tech communication facility for all-round efficiency in the management of the game and the company was to be given the status of the 'official IT partner' of BCCI.
"Nothing has been implemented," Amrit Mathur, director of BCCI's communication and coordination committee (CCC), told IANS.
When approached for their version, Reliance, which split recently, indicated that the tie-up would not be affected due to the break up between the Ambani scions. The official did not give reasons as to why the tie-up had not been implemented.
"Reliance Infocomm's commitment to all tie-ups continues," said a Reliance Infocomm official.
Another BCCI official said that when the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) and Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) had approached Reliance in April for setting up media facilities for the Kanpur and Delhi one-day internationals against Pakistan the company had not been forthcoming.
"Reliance officials declined to provide the facilities, saying that the system they had would not work at the stadiums," said the BCCI official.
As part of the tie-up, Reliance was to supply state-of-the-art communication facilities and technical support system like video conferencing, and also help in technical matters like age determination of junior players and even the preparation of grounds and pitches.
Another CCC member said that the issue was discussed a few times in the meetings, but no concrete decisions were taken.
"We have discussed it a few times as it comes under the CCC's ambit. Anyway, if Reliance does not honour its commitment, we will find some other company," he said on condition of anonymity.
On Aug 16 last year, Dalmiya had announced in Kolkata after a BCCI working committee meeting: "We had approached Reliance Industries and they agreed to extend a supporting hand."
Dalmiya also said that the assurance had come from his talks with Mukesh Ambani.
However, after the recent split in the conglomerate, Reliance Infocomm has gone to Mukesh's brother Anil Ambani.
It remains to be seen when, and if, the ambitious project would see the light of the day, for two reasons: the spilt in Reliance and the change at the helm of BCCI, which is now headed by Ranbir Singh Mahendra.
