For the first time, a book by a Nepalese lyricist has been released on Mt Everest!
Ever since Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa conquered Mt Everest in 1953, people are making a song and dance about the tallest peak for different reasons.
This summer, a Nepalese couple decided to tie the knot atop the 8,848 m peak.
One team headed for the top to carry out a medical experiment, and another went up trying to retrieve the bodies of three climbers who perished there last year.
Now, a Nepalese lyricist hit the highest note this climbing season when he got a pair of climbers to officially release his latest collection of songs on Mt Everest.
Not much is known about aspiring Nepalese songwriter Ramesh Adhikari. He brought out a collection of songs in print form about four years ago but nobody had really heard of "Mero Desh" (My Country).
However, Adhikari hit the headlines Sunday when state-run daily Rising Nepal reported how an ingenious Adhikari had managed to get it "officially" released, four years later, on Mt Sagarmatha, as the peak is known in Nepal.
"I had always wanted to have my book released on Mt Everest," Adhikari told the daily.
Accordingly, he roped in a pair of Sherpa brothers, Tashi lakpa and Chhang Dawa Sherpa, who were part of an Everest expedition, to carry a copy of the book each.
Tashi, 19, went up to the summit with a copy of the book on May 30 while the 23-year-old Chhang followed the next day.
A proud Adhikari displayed a picture of one of the brothers, holding the book aloft in his gloved right hand on the summit.
Along with the book, the brothers also released a CD containing songs on child labour, the nine-year-old Maoist insurgency and the effect of HIV/AIDS.
However, the daily did not clarify if the songs in the CD were also composed by Adhikari.
It remains to be seen, however, if Adhikari's songs will hit such a high note in the market.
