After just six of the 20 cars took part in the US Grand Prix, spectators who turned up for the event have filed charges against Formula 1 and the others involved in staging the race.
The controversial race Sunday saw 14 cars running on Michelin tyres withdraw from the event after the warm-up lap after two of the Michelin runners suffered high-speed blowouts on the banked 330 kmph turn of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Indianapolis Star Tuesday reported that Colorado resident Larry Bowers has "filed a class action lawsuit against the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Formula One Group, Formula One Administration, Michelin and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway following Sunday's United States Grand Prix".
Bowers claims the event was fraudulent in that "Formula One, the FIA, Michelin, the teams partnered with Michelin and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway forged an agreement allowing the Michelin teams to participate in the formation lap and then exit the track prior to the start of the race".
"The alleged 'race' participated by just three teams did not constitute a true Grand Prix race under the FIA and Formula One rules in that the race was started with an insufficient number of participants," the lawsuit stated.
Bowers, through the lawsuit, is seeking reimbursement for the five tickets he bought for the race and for other expenses incurred while attending the event.
The publication also reported that James E. Miller of Boone County and William Daniels of Hamilton County also filed suits at the Marion Superior Court holding Formula 1, the FIA (Formula One's ruling body), Michelin, the boycotting teams, and the Speedway responsible for not producing the type of event advertised.
