Power supply in most parts of Punjab was severely affected following a major technical snag in the power distribution system that brought major power generating units to a grinding halt Saturday evening.

Power generation at thermal and hydro-electricity projects in the state came to a halt around 5 p.m.

Senior Punjab state electricity board (PSEB) officials admitted that power supply had been badly affected across Punjab, Chandigarh and some parts of Jammu and Kashmir following the tripping of power generating units.

The affected generating plants included the Ropar thermal plant (six units), Bathinda thermal plant (four units), Lehra Mohabbat thermal plant (two units) and the Bhakra Dam hydroelectric project (two units).

PSEB engineers said they were trying to ascertain the reason for the technical snag.

They added that all efforts were being made to restore power supply.
