    Default Airtel Broadband torrent Throttling/Blocking

I am experiencing slow speeds (of the order of 30 kbps to 50 kbps) on my Airtel 2Mbps connection. My plan ( Rs. 1299, 2mbps, 20 GB) was activated on the 26th of may 2011.

Between 12 am and 9am i get download speeds (torrents) of around 250kbps. BUT after that in the afternoons, evenings and at night untill 12 am again i get speeds of only 30 kbps-50 kbps when im downloading a torrent.

for the next few days i called the airtel customer care and explained to them my problem...but to kno avail. from them i heard all different kinds of excuses like:

1 - torrents depends on the users and in the morning there are no users.
2 - torrents are from american website and they are 10.5 hours behind us.
3 - the torrent im downloading must be very old with no seeds..

they made me conduct a speed test (on which i got 2mpbs speed connection) and download sum random file from microsoft.com (on which i got 250 kbps speed) and then told me these were the only criteria they consider when testing the speeds.

they gave me random excuses saying torrent is illegal and they do not support it from there backend.

now, 2 of my friends from my own colony in south delhi, have the same connection and get 250 kbps all day long, irrespective of which torrent they are downloading.

when i told this fact to the airtel customer care..... THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY ANSWER. they could not even give excuses. they said they cannot comment of other users connections.

i cannot believe how a big multinational company like airtel can treat some of its customers like this.

and when i asked them about the torrent throttling from the backend during the daytime.... they vehemently denied this.

really dont know what to do now.... even spoke to the senior customer care executive but he was of no help either.

im facing such a big problem, while my friends and im sure many other users are enjoying their full speed torrent downloads all day long.

i dont know why airtel are discriminating and why many users like me are being singled out???

can any please advise what to do???

Default Airtel is choking torrent traffic

@Karan I have a Airtel 1499 Plan, which gives me a 4 Mbps bandwidth for 25GB download. It appears that since 11th June 2011, Airtel is choking torrent traffic. Earlier, I used to get download speed of at least 450kbps but now I only get a speed of at most 50kbps. This is not acceptable at all. Airtel is not helping its cause by choking torrent traffic. Such backhand tricks are fraught with malpractice. I'm thinking to either downgrade my plan to 2Mbps or change the service provider all together. Most of my download needs pertain torrents. At this speed the very idea of getting 4Mbps plan gets terribly defeated.

Any call to the Airtel elicits a standard reply: We do not guarantee torrent speed.

    @ Bikram

its actually unbelievable.... if this was happening to all the users... i would still believe them.... but everyone i know off that has the 2mbps plan gets 250+ kbps download speeds on the torrents 24-7.
you can try downgrading it to 2 mbps and i really hope they do solve your problem. even im going to downgrade it to 1mbps next billing cycle onwards... hopefully it will be sorted out.
i mean ...we are paying for this service... and as long as we are paying for it, we should be getting our money's worth.

i'll try contacting "Airtel Presence (Airtel Customer Service Team)". they have posted a message above. but dont know whether they will solve the problem or give me more excuses. did u try contacting them???

Unhappy Airtel uses Cisco NBAR to throttle P2P

I also have posted a thread on airtel throttling but Airtel doesn't want to be serious with this issue(no replies to the issue from airtel executive). We don't let airtel to follow the Comcast pattern, i want compensation for blocking P2P exchange i usually use it to communicate to my friends ,send/receive files as it uses half the time and resources with simultaneous exchange.
Here is the Website to explain how Airtel is blocking P2P
    www dslreports com/faq/11158

Do not indulge through email conversations Airtel Customer Care Executive would mark it a matter of third party Software(any bittorent related) and try to baffle customers with same reply with auto generated messages.
Hope above link may help to voice against their monopolistic policy of dealing market.

Compensation is important because tommorow they will block HTTP and WorldWideWeb(WWW) which is equally popular in current scenario as P2P and generate lot of traffic.

    @ Rakesh Ranga

    Dear Sir,

my issue hasn't been resolved, so please do not put your trust in the same! these days its seems your trust is not worth much!

an airtel technical executive visited me 2 days ago on sunday and gave the same excuses that all the airtel employees have given.. im sure you would have a long list of excuses too!!

he made me speak so a senior exec on the phone who blatantly told me that airtel does not support torrents and when i asked him about my friends who got full download speed all day along....... again he had only one answer : "we cannot comment on other user's connections"

so sir, i am requesting you again to sort out this problem asap... plz do not discriminate.... we are paying for your service and will demand our money's worth.

    awaiting reply!

I am facing the same issue for a long time. I contacted till the appellate officer. No use. Nobody technically understands what the problem is.
    Common excuses given are:
Cannot comment on other user connections
We do not support third party software
We do not block any torrents
Torrents are illegal ( there are many legal torrents too! )

torrents speeds are capped at 60 KBps, while I am on 2mbps connection.
With so many users complaining all over the place, it is still a wonder how Airtel keeps denying the fact.

I am planning to change ISP which does not block torrent traffic.

    Default Blocking of Bandwidth

    Dear
    Airtel Customer Care,

I have been an airtel customer for more than 12 years now and have been using your mobile, broadband, landline and Digital TV services.
I am paying in excess of Rs.1800 per month because my usage is heavy and am required to send and receive huge amounts of data
online. Your recent unethical change in policies of shaping bandwidth has been really annoying and is causing a great deal of inconvenience to me.
Throttling speeds at your end is senseless as no ISP has any business looking into what their clients are accessing over the internet.
It is really shocking to see how you are invading a client's privacy.
I feel cheated and robbed off my money as I am not being given the service I am paying for.
While buying this broadband connection nearly 6 years ago i was not informed of any such ridiculous move and shall not tolerate it any further.
I ask this problem be verified as soon as possible or I shall be left with no choice but to discontinue with airtel.
    Find my details attached

The same problem is with me since 4 or 5 months. Now i feel like throwing my Airtel connection out side of my house. I use 1599 plan MAX 75 GB during day time i don't get speed at all not even 30kb it's about 5 - 10 kb most of the time. I did lot of complains about it and all the time i use to get same stupid excuse that we don't support torrent and if you want to check the download speed then please try downloading something from microsoft[dot]com, are you kidding me.?I mean people are not taking 75GB plan, 50GB plan 30Gb plan with high speed just for downloading something from microsoftp[dot]com people use to take these kinds of plans for downloading torrents and watching videos that's it. I have no other choice except keep using this shit because in my city no other companies are providing connection's in my area. Airtel this is my very humble request that please stop throttling are torrent's download speed because nobody likes wasting there money and time in these king of things.

    Thank you.

Default Still Not Getting any speeds

    Dear Airtel_Presence

Contrary to your response, my problem is STILL VERY MUCH exisiting and I am still experiencing reduced speed on torrent client.

FYI My PC is not out of order and the torrent I am using has been tested simultaneously on 3 other ISP's that are giving
perfect speeds which rules out a "third party software" issue.

    Expecting a solution this time
