Hi:

I have a joint bank a/c in the name of A, B & C. Account number
alloted to me is 123. Now if the drawee wish to make payment by way
of cheque - how the cheque should be drawn in favour of payee? This
is my specific query.

Cheque contains following elements. Name of the payee, date, account
payee or not (one can cross), amount in words and amount is figures
and signature of drawee.

Query: The drawee wish to pay to joint a/c 123. In spite of writing
payee's name as A,B & C, if the drawee wish to write BANK NAME
followed by BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER (e.g. HDFC BANK A/c number 123),
Should bank accept and honour the cheque.

Recently HDFC bank returned the cheque citing reason, payees name
required. The other branch official said cheque can be issued in the
name A or B or C or AB, AC, BC etc. Finally they broke down and
accepted that they erred by returning the cheque where payee was
identified as Bank name followed by bank number.

Will someone guide me thru various provisions of Negotiable
Instruments Act. I also look forward to some illustrations and
practices and experiences of group members.
