    Default ICICI Bank Mess up

    Hello Sir,

I have SB Account with ICICI Bank Chennai. I have issued two post
dated cheques to HDFC for repayment of my housing loan. EMI amount
was Rs.12,351/-. Cheques dated 30.10.2006 and 30.11.2006 respectively.

On 2.11.2006, My first EMI Cheque dated 30.10.2006 came to Bank for
clearing. To my surprise, amount debited by ICICI bank to my A/c
only Rs.351/-. I Called up thier so called customer care and informed
about the difference. Thier simple answer was " You have issued
cheque only for Rs.351/- and your a/c debited only Rs.351/- .
Narration given by them in the ATM Mini statement " Inward Clearing
HDFC Bank" I have not issued any cheque to HDFC Bank. It is only HDFC.

After constant chasing them, they have taken my complaint and gave
docket number and also asked me to call after 2 days.
In mean time I checked up with HDFC about the credit. They said they
have received credit only for Rs.351 and they have put penalty for
non receipt of EMI in time. Till now I have not got the credit of
    Rs.12,000/- in my HDFC A/c.

On 9.11.2006, my account was debited Rs.12,000 by ICICI Bank and
naration was given "encoding dated 2.11.2006 HDFC." ICICI Customer
care people blaming HDFC for encoding error. It was only after
educating them to verify the cheque leaf phisically for the amount
issued they have credited the amount.

Who should take the pain for co-ordinating HDFC and ICICI Bank ?

Becare and verify all your transactions each month.

    Regards

Encoding is a technique which they use in the MICR
band below the cheque to capture the details of your
cheque in the electronic form. RBI captures these data
and settlement is effected between banks with this
data captured. It's the responsibility of HDFC bank to
    encode the cheques properly.

There are millions of cheques that are encoded by
banks and possibility of such errors happen where
ENCODING system is manual. They blame is soley on HDFC
clearing house. You can very well take it up with HDFC
    and have your fine/penalty reversed.
