    Default Passbook entries

    Sir,

My wife have saving account in some co-op. bank, in which her salary
gets deposited directly. She is having this account for last almost 8
    years.

Off late bank has stopped giving "complete details" of the cheques
issued to third parties.i.e. the passbook entry for the cheque issued
does not show the name of beneficiary. Against this they type I/W
Clg. i.e. inward clearing. The staff member says, account holder has
to keep the record of the same & thus trying to shed off their
responsibilities. Is this correct ? On enquiring with another staff
members for details he also could not answer satisfactorily.

The passbook is supposed to be an important document for income tax
purpose as well as for court matters.

Even the RBI circular on customer service says that "complete
    details" should be given.Circular No.: RBI/ 2005-06/129
    UBD.BPD.(PCB).MC.No.10 /09.39.00/2005-06
    August 18 , 2005.-----> 2.5.3 Savings bank passbooks/statement of
    accounts
    (a) Banks may devise controls to ensure that the passbooks are
updated on an ongoing basis, and complete and correct particulars are
    written in a legible hand.

Could anyone guide me for further steps to be taken to have correct
    entries in passbook.

    Thanking you,
    With regards.

Thanks for providing very very helpful information. I have also had similar
experiences many times. Now I have written a letter to my bank, quoting the
same RBI circular reference number, asking them to provided full details of
the transaction. I hope this would work.

My bank is New India Co-op. Bank Ltd., Vasant Vihar, Thane.

The manager has just said that it's a good suggestion and they would try act
on it. However he also said that all the cheques go to reserve bank for
transfer where the respective users do not record all the info properly
thereby making banks not able to provide the info. So probably the practice
has to get followed by all and not one bank.

The statement of the bank manager is incorrect, if this was the case, no bank
would be giving all the details. I get all the details regarding passbook
entries in my passbook. It is mostly there staff which does not want to take the
trouble of posting the correct information and find shortcuts to do their work.

    Dear Mr. Rajesh,
The "stories" heard about this are various. It is necessary to find out from RBI
the correct reason & the circular no.Since they do have the website it is
    necessary for them to update the information timely (which they are not doing);
the normal reason for not updating the information should be taken as
    misdirection to customers & consumers.
( or else do not publish anything on internet & take no risk of committing
    offence.)
I asked some person in RBI he gave me totally different & "unfortunately" the
reason aggreable & finding convincible to people of 'modern' thinking. The
    reason was as under"
Some party having large sum transactions, to the tune of 50 lacs & so.., every
day complained to RBI for the risk of having names of beneficairy & the issure
of the cheques in each other's bank statements. Please understand this correctly
& try to read in between the lines. Second story is , thesedays all clearence
take place on internet & so the data is transferred "directly to the respected
    accounts".
Here, it is the responsibility of the person who feeds the data. The clerks are
just trying to shed their responsibility by saying they have lot of cheques for
clearing. Afterall they are paid for it. It is easier to type than to wite the
    data by hand.
AFTER PRIVATISATION IT HAS BECOME NECESSARY TO SEE THE RULES MADE,IMPLIED &
EXECUTED; ON CAREFUL MIND IT WILL BE IMPRESSED THAT IT IS ONLY ON PAPERS &
    NEGOTIABLE.

    Dear All,

ICICI bank does not provide PASS books, They provide Statement every 3-months,
it is very difficult to keep Track also we need to file all statements.
Handling Pass Book is very Convenient,

Can ICICI be forced to provide PASSBOOK instead of Statement ?

    Default False entry.

In 2006 my deceased father appeared to have withdrawn 100k cash from his savings account with the Halifax Bank. He was 90 years old at the time. On further investigation it was found that the 100k cash withdrawal was a false entry, and that this money had actually been transferred to a currency purchasing company.

Is this legal given the fraudulent claims behind this transaction?
