Pakistan Saturday hanged an army man found guilty of an assassination bid in December 2003 on President Pervez Musharraf.

Abdul Salaam Siddiqui was executed in New Central Jail in Multan early on Saturday, reports Online news agency.

Pakistan's vice chief of army staff and later Musharraf, who is also army chief, rejected mercy pleas by Siddiqui.

Thirty-three-year-old Siddiqui, who belongs to Jacobabad town in Sindh, was shifted to Multan Central Jail from Sialkot Jail a month ago.

He was earlier given the death sentence by a military court for the Dec 14, 2003, bombing of the presidential convoy in Jhanda Chichi near General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

On Friday, Siddiqui had a last meeting with his family in the jail.

Talking to reporters Saturday, the military man's father Abdul Karim Bux said his son had told him he was not guilty and had been falsely charged. He said his son had joined Pakistan Army at the age of 16. However, he did not know his son's rank.

He said his son was posted in Peshawar two years ago but his whereabouts had not been known for a few months.

Siddiqui has left behind two sons and a daughter aged between four and 10 years.
