Left-affiliated trade unions have threatened a daylong nationwide strike Sep 29 unless the government meets their demands on 16 issues, including those concerning social security and an employment guarantee.

A 16-point resolution was passed by a national convention of seven trade unions here Saturday that wants the government to stop its privatisation programme of selling stake in state-run companies, union leaders said after the meeting.

They also want the government to enact a legislation that will not only provide for better working conditions for employees, but also extend the social security net to the unorganised labour force and farm workers.

Demands have also been made for another legislation to prevent sexual harassment of women workers, constitution of a pay commission, enhancement of salary limits for eligibility of bonus and enforcement of minimum wages act in all areas.

The unions also said the government should drop its plan to raise foreign direct investment limits in the financial sector and disallow overseas investments in some key areas like retail trade, coal mining and pension funds.
