The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested
Sunil Kumar Agarwal, General Manager of cellular mobile telecom
service (CMTS) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Bhubaneswar,
for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a local security
agency.
Agarwal was arrested here after the CBI laid a trap following
receipt of a complaint from Niranjan Sahoo, Managing Partner of Om
Security & Services, Bhubaneswar, that he was demanding bribe to
extend his contract.
Following this information, the CBI laid a trap and caught Agarwal
in his official residence while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from
Sahoo as part of an overall bribe amount of Rs 2 lakh. Under the
direction of CBI SP Pranab Mohanty, the crack team, led by CBI DSP
Jay Narayan Rana, caught Agarwal red-handed and arrested him on the
spot. Later, a raid was also conducted at Agarwal's residence,
during which the CBI recovered cash and deposits worth Rs 10 lakh. A
CBI source said the agency sleuths also found documents pertaining
to the purchase of immovable property worth Rs 30 lakh during the
raid. It has come to the notice of the CBI that Agarwal is having a
number of bank accounts and lockers in various banks, which are
being inquired into, added the source. The CBI had received a
written complaint from Sahoo that Agarwal was repeatedly demanding
money and harassing him. Though the security agency's contract ended
in January this year, neither its bills were paid nor the contract
was being extended. A criminal case was registered on Tuesday by the
local CBI authorities, following which at 8.30 am on Wednesday,
Agarwal was trapped and arrested while demanding and receiving the
bribe amount. After the arrest, Agarwal was produced in a court.
As Agarwal belongs to Banka of Bihar, the CBI has already alerted
its Patna office about the case. CBI Joint Director BB Mishra, who
is also present here, is supervising the case.
