Maha to appoint commissioners to ensure implementation of RTI Mumbai, Jul 23 (PTI) Maharashtra has decided to appoint ten commissioners and a chief commissioner to remove the loopholes in proper implementation of Right to Information Act in the state, social activist Anna Hazare said here.
The decision was taken at a meeting Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil had today with Hazare, who had been campaigning for the purpose. The appointments would be done by the Governor in consultation with the Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition and Ministers.
The Commissioners, to be posted in various parts of the state, will not be elected representatives but eminent persons including from like social and legal fraternity, he said. The Commissioners would be given judicial powers to take action against those delaying or refusing to give information as per the Act.
Hazare said the state government has assured that the Commissioners would be appointed by October 12 alongwith the appointment of Information and Appeal Officer in every district. State Rural Development Minister Vijaysinh Mohite-patil and Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat were also present at the meeting.
